The conversion of images into vector formats can be easily done with the powerful tool, Adobe Illustrator. Unlike raster images, vector images are highly beneficial as they can be resized without compromising their quality. In this tutorial, I will provide a detailed explanation on how to vectorize an image using Adobe Illustrator.
Step 1: Open the Image in Adobe Illustrator
Open Adobe Illustrator, go to “File” > “Open” and navigate to the image you
wish to vectorize.
Step 2: Select the Image
Once you have the image on the workspace, use the “Selection Tool” (the black arrow) and click
on the image to select it.
Step 3: Convert the Image into a Vector
With the image selected, navigate to the toolbar at the top of the screen and select
“Window” > “Image Trace”. This will open a new panel.
Step 4: Adjust the Image Trace Settings
In the Image Trace panel, you can adjust the settings to get the desired effect. The “Mode”
option lets you choose whether you want a color, grayscale, or black and white vector. The
“Threshold” slider allows you to control the level of detail in your vector image.
Step 5: Expand the Image
Once you’re satisfied with the traced image, go to “Object” > “Image
Trace” > “Expand” to finalize the conversion process.
Step 6: Un-group and Edit the Image (Optional)
After expanding, the image is grouped together. You can un-group it by right-clicking and selecting
“Ungroup”. This will allow you to select and edit individual parts of the image.
Congratulations! You now know how to vectorize an image in Adobe Illustrator. Remember, vectorizing images
can tremendously improve their quality and scalability, making them perfect for various graphic design
projects.
