How To Make Google Sheets Dark Mode

With the increasing use of digital screens, one of the most appealing features to many users these days is the dark mode option. Dark mode, as the name implies, changes your usually bright screen into darker shades. This feature can reduce eye strain in low-light conditions and save a significant amount of battery life. Google Sheets, being a commonly used tool for spreadsheets, does not inherently have a dark mode option, but there are ways to get around this. In this blog post, we will guide you on how to make Google Sheets dark mode.

Using Google Chrome Extensions

The simplest and most effective way to enable dark mode on Google Sheets is to use Google Chrome extensions. One of the popular extensions for this purpose is Dark Reader. To get this, follow these steps:

  1. Open Google Chrome and go to the Chrome Web Store.
  2. In the search bar, type “Dark Reader” and click on the first result that pops up.
  3. Click on “Add to Chrome” to install the extension.
  4. A new icon of the Dark Reader extension will appear in your extension tray.
  5. Click on this icon and toggle the switch to “On”. You can also adjust the brightness, contrast, sepia, and grayscale to your liking.

Now, when you open Google Sheets, it should be in dark mode. The Dark Reader extension affects all your websites, but you can choose which sites to apply to by clicking on the “Only for” button.

Using Google Sheets Themes

Another method for getting a dark background in Google Sheets is by changing the theme of your spreadsheet. This is not a true dark mode and would only apply to the current sheet you’re working on. Here’s how you can do this:

  1. Select the cells that you want to turn dark (press CTRL+A for selecting all cells).
  2. Click on the bucket icon in the toolbar for “Fill color”, then choose your desired dark color.
  3. To change the font color to a lighter shade, click on the “A” icon next to the bucket in the toolbar, and select a light color.

And that’s it! Now your selected Google Sheets cells will have a dark background with light text.

While Google Sheets does not have a built-in dark mode feature yet, these workarounds can make your spreadsheet editing experience more comfortable for night-time work or in low-light environments. Whether you prefer using a Chrome extension like Dark Reader, or manually changing your Sheets theme, there’s a way to make Google Sheets work for you in dark mode. Happy spreadsheeting!
