Charts are a great tool to represent data visually. However, properly labeling your chart including its legend is pivotal for understanding. Why is Labelling Important?

Labels are of paramount importance in making your chart understandable. They identify different data series or categories. In other words, they provide context to your data making it comprehensible to any reader. Without appropriate labeling, your data visualization may lose its purpose.

Steps to Label Legends in Google Sheets

Here are the steps you can follow to label legends in your Google Sheets chart:

  1. Create your chart in Google Sheets: Highlight the cells that contain the data you want to include in your chart, then go to the menu and select Insert > Chart.
  2. Once your chart is created, you can see that Google Sheets automatically creates a legend corresponding to the data you selected. However, Google Sheets does not allow you to directly edit this legend.
  3. Instead, to change the legend text, you need to modify the headers of your column or row data. This is because the legend text is directly linked to these headers.
  4. Simply go to the cell with the header information that you want to appear on your legend and change the text.
  5. After editing the header cell, the chart will automatically update and reflect the changes in the legend.

Customizing Your Legend

Google Sheets also allows you to customize your legend. To do this:

  1. Click on your chart to select it.
  2. Click on the three vertical dots that appear on the top-right of the chart, and select ‘Edit chart’.
  3. In the Chart editor pane on the right, select the ‘Customize’ tab.
  4. In the dropdown list, select ‘Legend’. Here you can customize the legend’s position, font, size, format, and color.

Although Google Sheets does not allow direct editing of legends, with this workaround, it is still quite manageable. Remember, a well-labeled chart is not only aesthetically pleasing but also accurately represents your data and makes it understandable to everyone.
