Step 1: Understanding Merged Layers

Merging layers in Photoshop combines several layers into one. This is often done to reduce file size or simplify your workspace. Once layers are merged, they are essentially flattened into one layer, and their individual properties are lost. Unfortunately, this process is not directly reversible. Therefore, the term “unmerge” isn’t technically accurate.

Step 2: Using the History Panel

The easiest way to “unmerge” layers is by using the History panel. This panel documents each action you’ve performed since opening the file. So, if you’ve just merged your layers, you can easily revert this action.

To use the History Panel:

  1. Go to the Window menu in the top navigation bar.
