In order to effectively manage a project, it is necessary to handle a significant number of tickets. Jira is a popular and widely-used project management tool that is utilized by development teams to monitor and address issues, bugs, and tasks. At times, it may be necessary to close multiple Jira tickets simultaneously, also known as bulk closing. This can be a challenging undertaking when done manually. Luckily, Jira offers a streamlined method for bulk closing tickets. In this blog post, we will guide you through the procedure for bulk closing Jira tickets.
Prerequisites
Before we dive into the steps, make sure you have the necessary permissions to execute bulk operations in your Jira project. You should be able to Browse Projects, Edit Issues and Bulk Change.
Steps to Bulk Close Jira Tickets
Follow the steps below to bulk close your Jira tickets:
Step 1: Navigate to the Issue Navigator
The first step is to navigate to the Issue Navigator. You can do this by selecting Issues and filters from the sidebar of your Jira home page and clicking on Search issues.
Step 2: Filter Your Issues
Use JQL (Jira Query Language) to filter and display the issues you want to close. An example query could be project = MyProject AND status = Open. This will display all the open issues in the ‘MyProject’ project.

Once you have filtered the issues, click on the Tools dropdown on the top right and select Bulk Change. You’ll then be presented with a list of the issues from your search. Select the issues you wish to close by checking the boxes next to them. Hit Next when you’re done.
Step 4: Select the Bulk Operation
In the following screen, you’ll need to select the operation to perform on the selected issues. In our case, we want to Transition Issues, which means we want to change their status. Click Next.
Step 5: Select the Transition Status
Here, you will be asked to choose the transition status. Select Closed or any other appropriate status based on your workflow and click Next.
Step 6: Confirmation
Finally, review your bulk operation and if everything looks good, click on the Confirm button. Jira will then begin processing the bulk operation, and your selected issues will be transitioned to the new status.
Step 7: Check Your Issues
After the operation completes, go back to your issue navigator and run your original query to ensure that your issues have been transitioned to the desired status.
Conclusion
Now that you know how to bulk close Jira tickets, you can save time when managing large volumes of issues. Remember, the Bulk Change option is a powerful tool, so use it responsibly and double-check your filters and selections before confirming any changes. Happy project managing!
