Canvas, the Learning Management System (LMS) commonly used by universities and colleges, is a great tool for managing coursework, assignments, grades, and more. But after long periods of use, the bright white background can lead to visual fatigue. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could switch it to a dark mode?
Unfortunately, Canvas natively doesn’t support a Dark Mode option at this moment. But don’t worry. Through the use of browser extensions and Stylish themes, we can easily customize our Canvas interface to Dark Mode. This blogpost will guide you on how to do that.
Method 1: Using Browser Extension
Several browser extensions can be used to enable dark mode on virtually any webpage, including Canvas. One of the most popular is Dark Reader.
Step 1: Install Dark Reader
You can add Dark Reader to your browser from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons. Once installed, the Dark Reader icon, a small dark circle, will appear in your browser’s toolbar.
Step 2: Enable Dark Mode
Click on the Dark Reader icon and toggle the switch from “Off” to “On”. This will immediately apply a dark theme to all your websites, including Canvas.
Method 2: Using Stylish Themes
Stylish is a user styles manager that allows you to apply custom CSS to websites. There are many user-created themes that you can use, including several for Canvas.
Step 1: Install Stylish to Your Browser
Stylish is available for Firefox, Chrome, and Opera. After installation, an ‘S’ icon will appear in your browser’s toolbar.
Step 2: Install a Canvas Dark Mode Theme
Go to the Stylish themes website, search for “Canvas Dark Mode” and choose one that you like. Click on “Install Style” to add it to Stylish.
Step 3: Enable the Dark Mode Theme on Canvas
Open Canvas and click on the Stylish ‘S’ icon. Choose the installed dark mode theme from the list and apply it. Your Canvas should now be in dark mode.
And voilà, you’ve successfully enabled Dark Mode for Canvas. No more straining your eyes while working late at night on your assignments!
Note that these methods only change how you see Canvas; it doesn’t affect how others see their interface.
Remember, a comfortable viewing experience can improve your productivity and make your work or study sessions less tiring. So, give this Dark Mode technique a try!
